Studied conducting, theory and composition at Warsaw’s Music Academy, graduating in 1975, and the same year made his conducting debut at The Grand Theatre - National Opera in Warsaw (Teatr Wielki Opera Narodowa) in a new production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. In 1976 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf and a year later won III Prize at the prestigious Karajan Competition in Berlin which resulted in his debuts with the Berlin and New York Philharmonic Orchestras. In 1978 he became Principal Guest Conductor, and two years later Music Director of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, presently NOSPR (Wielka Orkiestra Symfoniczna Polskiego Radia i Telewizji, obecnie NOSPR), with whom he toured extensively throughout Europe and in January 2009 was appointed for the second time Music Director of the Katowice orchestra. He has also worked closely and continues his collaboration with the Polish Chamber Opera (Polska Opera Kameralna) and Sinfonia Varsovia in Warsaw.
In 1982 he moved to London and made his debut with the Philharmonia Orchestra and became Principal Conductor of Capital Radio’s Wren Orchestra. He has guest conducted some of the most renowned orchestras throughout Europe, the Americas and Far East. Highly regarded in the field of opera he has performed in such theatres as the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Dusseldorf, Opera Comique in Paris and the English National Opera. In 1994 he renewed his collaboration with Poland working with among others the National Philharmonic (Filharmonia Narodowa) and Warsaw Chamber Opera (Warszawska Opera Kameralna). In 1998 he was appointed Artistic Director, and from 2002 – 05 also held the post of General Director of the Polish National Opera in Warsaw where he conducted many celebrated productions. He was also Music Director of the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet in Vilnius. He has to his credit many acclaimed CD recordings. About his recording of Szymanowski’s King Roger, nominated for ‘recording of the year’ by BBC Music Magazine, the Grammophone critic wrote: ‘(...)On every count including pennies, this sweeps the board…under Kaspszyk it makes a mesmerizing impression.’
Since 2009 Jacek Kaspszyk has been the Music Director of NOSPR.
